Question about Apparel Industry Management [Jul. 8th, 2010|08:32 am]

I'd like to know if anyone has been enrolled in this program? I'm thinking of enrolling as Professional Designation since I already have a college degree and only attend there for 1 year (which I prefer). I heard that the manufacturing facility downtown LA that they use to teach students is run down and scary. I have yet to see it with my own eyes. Anyone feel safe around FIDM campus in downtown LA? However, I used to live in LA before so it has been a while since I lived there. How're the classes and professors?

I am going to be attending FIDM in LA starting April quarter. Very nervous about the student housing living situation... I've already done the whole 4 girls in a small 2 bedroom via the Art Institute student housing. Yuck.

Does anyone know if you have to sign a whole 1 year lease for student housing or if you can go by quarter? Either way student housing will be a go for me because I don't know anyone else out there! Thanks in advance.

Transfering [Nov. 8th, 2009|08:55 pm]

Hello all :)
I am thinking about applying for next fall for Graphic Design. I am from NJ and I am a transfer student. I am 22 and interested in getting an apartment. My question is to anyone with an apartment out there... how do you pay for it!? I know this school requires a lot of work so I would like to either have a job with not a lot of hours or not to have one at all (which I have never done). Did you apply for a loan to help pay for an apartment? I'm clueless so any help would be great! Also is anyone here from the east coast?

International students [Jul. 28th, 2009|07:51 pm]
Hey guys I really need your help!
Are there any international students here that got into FIDM? It would be tons of help if you guys reply me.
I'm currently taking my A Levels but I want to apply for the merch&product development course in FIDM.
I'm superrr confused on the application process and all for international students.

Also, I've been researching alot online and some people say that I can learn as much taking merch courses in community colleges(for less) instead of FIDM?

Thanks so much!

Help! [May. 16th, 2009|09:59 pm]

[Current Mood |curiouscurious]

Hi! I hope that I can get some of my question answered about fidm any comments will be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of going to the LA campus and getting my AA in Apparel Manufacturing Management. Now, I don't have that much money to go to college I only have about $7,000 to 8,000 saved including savings bonds. My dad has agreed to help me out a bit but the rest I have to use student loans.
I live in Colorado and I was thinking about going to the Art Institute here which also offers some fashion programs. The Denver Art Institute is one of the original schools so it's supposed to be pretty good and they really seem commited to their students. They even help you find jobs after you graduate.

I suppose I should tell you what I want to do after college to give you a bit of insight. I just want to open my own personal boutique and run my own little fashion line as well. I really could care less about getting famous or becoming some household name I just want to do what makes me happy.

I'm also planning on taking a Graphic Design Class next year at BTEC which is a trade school for high school students. I've also been taking a marketing class at my school for the past two years which is a joke but I learned a little.  I'm a very commited student and once I start something I finish it.

I'm not worried about getting in because I have well above a 3.0 and the admission project seems like a breeze.

First, what was your overall experience at fidm? I've been reading through this community and the responses seem pretty mixed.

What did you learn or took from fidm?

Did fidm help you with your future career plans in the slightest?

I know that the fashion design major takes a lot of work but what about the other majors?

Do you have time for a job while attending fidm?

What is your social life like?

What type of clubs or extracurricular activities does fidm offer?

Are there any programs to study abroad?

For those of you who came out of state how did that work out for you? I already know about the whole student housing being a joke thing.

Would you reccomend an out of state students to apply at the fidm?

Thinking about FIDM ... [Apr. 8th, 2009|12:18 am]
Hi everyone,

My name is Heather and I am a 23 year old from Michigan.  I am almost to the point of graduation from my university here in Michigan, where I'll be graduating with a dual-Bachelor's degree.

The past few years have been a little hard on me emotionally and health-wise, and some of my initial plans post-college plans are just not going to work out because of some of my physical limitations.  I wanted to go into musical theatre, but now with my injuries, dancing isn't realistic for me now, if ever again, because i have some limited mobility.

I have always been artistic, I love fashion and clothes and am a certifiable shopaholic, and I have my certificate in graphic design.  One of the few things I love as much as performing is fashion.  It will be about 18 months before I am able to leave Michigan, so it gives me time to think and process and decide if this is what I really want to do.  But I have been advised by my doctors that I might do considerably better if I were to move to a warmer state, and I have really been looking at FIDM over the past few months.

I am interested to know how the transition is -- is there anyone out there (or do you know anyone) who has begun their education their a little later?  And how do students moving long distances seem to transition?  What is the social life like?  (I know that sounds silly, because it's LA, but I come from a pretty close knit, Greek community, so I am wondering if it is easy for people to adjust.)

Thanks. :)

What is the student housing like in FIDM LA and will loans cover that? I need to figure out if I would rather just get a roommate and live on my own or if living through the school would be best as long as loans will cover the cost.

Seeking roommate(s) [Oct. 24th, 2008|01:40 pm]

Hello Friends,

In two months I will sadly be able to call myself a college graduate. But alas, I’m just not ready to move to the big city with that girlfriend I don’t have and start that career which I also don’t have. Being open minded and aimless, my only dream is to start a new life somewhere with a bunch of crazy art school kids.

I come from SUNY Purchase, a school that defines the words “liberal” and “artsy.” For instance, In my sound/interactive media class my lab partner has constructed a Tiki costume out of cardboard and bamboo which he wears on a daily basis. What a blast!

I am the best roommate I know. Clean, tidy, respectful, easy, quiet, and some people may say almost too quiet. I find myself learning to love just about everything that comes across my path. These things include Polar Bears, ultra-loud music, assorted books, typography, and dancing! And if I were one of those kids that defined himself by his music he listens to then the last three shows I went to were Deerhoof, Skeletonbreath/Monotonix, and the Wham City Round Robin Tour.

Sigh. It’s hard to sell myself on this livejournal but, it’s better than craigslist and I would really prefer to live with some creative minded people as opposed to a middle aged depressed man with poor taste in music and no sense of adventure.

Please feel free to contact me any time with questions if you’re looking for someone to fill a spot in your apartment or looking to move out of your dorm come this January. Short term/long term whatever.

Email: brendan.byrne@purchase.edu

Hugs and fishes!
